Another site for the male and female survivors of childhood abuse.

Action on Elder Abuse

This is a UK based charity which aims to prevent abuse in old age by raising awareness, education, promoting research and the collection and dissemination of information.

Ann Craft Trust

The Ann Craft Trust is a UK based organisation working with staff in the statutory, independent and voluntary sectors to help protect people with learning disabilities who may be at risk from abuse.

Boarding School Survivors

In a story in the Independent on Sunday the headline proclaimed "Boarding school is a form of child abuse". As the author of this site is a product of the system he took a personal interest. There are workshops publicised as well as an extract from a book on the subject "The Making of Them" by Nick Duffell. It is interesting that the Police have not concentrated on the private school system in their investigations. Whether or not there is a story waiting to be told is mere speculation.

Bully Online

An amazing source of information on Bullying. It has a link to our site included within it. There is nothing that you could conceivably think of on the subject that isn't there. There are even case reports of quantum assessments on "bullying" or "stress at work" cases as we like to know them. An excellent source of reference for any lawyers who are asked to do a case on this subject. The opening line is very telling - "Half the population are bullied ... most only realise it when they read this"

Care Leavers Reunited

This is a site inspired by Friends Reunited, but simply specialising in the Careleaver rather than the attender of any school. There are many homes registered worldwide, and stories from ex-residents. One can register free online and add one's own home to the site automatically.

Careleavers Association

"The Care Leavers Association is an ever-growing union of care leavers who actively advocate and support radical change within the care system and services for care leavers. The CLA also acts to protect, promote and strengthen rights for care leavers and to empower our members through support, education and training." says the Mission statement. Check out the site which is well designed and contains a lot of useful information about this organisation.

Colourful and child friendly describes this site - it contains the usual contact but an abundance of articles and information upon all children issues and child abuse.

DABS Pathfinder Service

This is an extension of the DABS directory site, which contains details of all the support groups in the UK for survivors of abuse. This is a directory site allied to the DABS Book site which is described as "A SIGNPOSTING SERVICE THAT PROVIDES FREE SUPPORT AND INFORMATION ALL OVER THE U.K. AND THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND TO ANYONE AND ANY ORGANISATION REGARDING ISSUES TO DO WITH CHILDHOOD ABUSE, INCEST AND RAPE"

Day of the Child

An American organisation which is celebrating its tenth anniversary as at 22/9/99. It is advertising at the time of writing this link a world wide event being held to draw attention to child abuse on 1st December 1999

Eaves & the Poppy Project

Eaves was formed in 1977 as Homeless Action. Its aim was to target the hidden homeless single women without dependents who are least likely to have other means of support by providing them with high quality, temporary homes. Eaves now runs several different support and accommodation projects as well as carrying out research and training on tackling violence against women.

FBGA (Former Girls & Boys Abused)

It's main aim is to draw attention to the abuse that has taken place at Quarrier Homes in Scotland down the generations, and highlight the successful prosecutions of ex-employees through the media and other sources. It also serves as a point of contact and signposting servicefor all Quarrier survivors

Fire in Ice

they describe themselves as follows "" Merseyside self help project run by and for the adult male survivors of childhood abuse, especially those who have suffered while in residential care. Fire in Ice aims to enable men who have suffered child abuse and their families to make positive change in their lives, also aims to make the care experience safe for children and young people. Fire in Ice offers 1 to 1, group and telephone support in a friendly empathic environment. We are not social workers, councillors, psychiatrists or "do gooders", Fire in Ice is made up of ordinary men who have overcome their abuse and want to help others do the same." Guardian Angels

Amongst other issues, such as health and the community this organisation is very concerned about child abuse. As they say "The International Alliance of Guardian Angels supports a vast network of agencies specialising in child protection and campaign against child abuse and exploitation. If you have any concerns at all regarding child abuse or a simple inquiry do not hesitate to contact us or our sister organisation the Cyber@ngels through our e-mail address, by letter, or by phone." Their site now hosts the biggest single directory of 'childline' style help lines anywhere in the world to get immediate help to children in crisis.

HAVOCA

This is an  organisation set up to help the survivors of childhood sexual abuse - founded by a survivor. It contains a lot of useful material and assistance.

INCAS (In Care Abuse Survivors)

It operates principally in Scotland have achieved great things for survivors North of the Border including an apology from the First Minister for all abuse survivors seen on our News Page. They describe themsleves thus "A Fellowship [Global] of historical survivors with membership open to all who have suffered / are still suffering from abuse whilst in any form of care. In addition,membership is open to families, friends and carers of those abused as well as other interested parties and agencies" Join their email subscription and keep up to date with their activities.

Irish Survivors

This excellent site provides primarily a tracing service for survivors of abuse from the Irish Institutions. It also provides information on the following issues: The Redress Scheme,Support services such as counselling and the Outreach Service;The Education Trust and access to Learning; Welfare benefits and special needs trusts; Returning to Ireland; Social Housing (UK) and Ireland;

Justice 4 Survivors

An abuse support group set up by, amongst others, Kevin Young, who was the victim of abuse at Medomsley Detention Centrre The main abuser was investigated for abuse in the 1970s and 1980's. The support group are calling upon Parliament for an investigation into whether the abuse was known about and ignored by other members of staff.

Kidscape

"Kidscape is committed to keeping children safe from abuse. Kidscape is the first charity in the UK established specifically to prevent bullying and child sexual abuse. Kidscape believes that protecting children from harm is key. Kidscape works UK-wide to provide individuals and organisations with practical skills and resources necessary to keep children safe from harm. The Kidscape staff equips vulnerable children with practical non-threatening knowledge and skills in how to keep themselves safe and reduce the likelihood of future harm."

Mankind UK

Mankind UK is a support and resource service for men who have been sexually abused, sexually assaulted and/or raped. It is a National UK charitable organisation based in Newhaven, East Sussex, established to provide counselling and support for victims of male rape, male sexual assault and violence,as well as sex abuse support for men.

MASH - Men as Survivors Helpine

The Men As Survivors Helpline provides a free telephone counselling service for men who have experienced any form of sexual abuse or sexual violence at any time in their lives. It is based in Bristol and helps out prisoners at Bristol prison amongst other functions.

MATCH (Mothers Apart from Their Children)

A small voluntary organisation which has been in existence since 1979 to offer non-judgmental emotional support to all mothers living apart from their children, whatever the circumstances.  They say "Our membership is £6 a year for the first year, and £10 thereafter, and some of our Members really struggle to find this amount. Our support is offered in two ways:  through a quarterly Newsletter, and through attendance at our national AGM, although the travel costs prevent many of our Members from attending." The site is informative and worth visiting - some of it makes distressing reading."

MOSAC

This is a voluntary organisation supporting all non abusing parents and carers whose children have been sexually abused, to provide support, advice, information and counselling following the discovery of sexual abuse

NAPAC

The site has been redesigned - have a look National Association for People Abused in Childhood - "Helping people who were abused in childhood" - An organisation which has been in existence since 1997 and was set up by Peter Saunders. It has the backing of the NSPCC who let them use their London offices. A telephone helplinehas been set up which directs survivors to appropriate services in their area . It features current NAPAC news, newsletters, support and information on ther services. There are a lot of good materials on the site for survivors who need help with their suffering and tools for coping with it. There is a search facility for support groups divided into regions with a map and post code search.

National Centre for Post Traumatic Disorder

This is a most authoritative source of information on PTSD with over a hundred fact sheets and a wealth of published articles, videos, and information for researchers and clinicians.

No2abuse

This site is set up by Teresa Cooper who is a survivor of abuse from a children's home called Kendall House. She has written a book entitled "Pin Down" (though nothing to do with the Pin Down enquiry). A sample chapter from the book is available to read on the site.
The site enables readers to share the author's personal experiences, by reading either the No2abuse Forum or the No2abuse Blog.

A huge site to view with vibrant colours - find out all about their excellent campaign on child abuse. There is also the largest free online child protection resource here

One in Four

They say "One in Four offers a voice to and support for people who have experienced sexual abuse and sexual violence.Research has consitently shown that one in four children will experience sexual abuse before the age of 18.Society has thus far been unwilling to face up to the deep rooted nature of this problem or the sheer scale of the long term damage it leaves in its wake.Our demeterined aim is to change this."

Phoenix Survivors

Shy Keenan, one of the founder members says that the group "was set up in the wake of a BBC Newsnight documentary ‘A Family Affair‘ which exposed prolific, current and historical, child sexual abuse. It also exposed the complete failure on the part of Wirral authorities, to protect children from an entire network of known paedophiles, operating out of the north of England, unchallenged, for over three decades. Merseyside Police named the investigation “Operation Phoenix”. Dozens of victims came forward, but, not all could have their day in court or the Justice they deserve.  Phoenix survivors was set up to inform and support all Phoenix survivors give them a voice and make a real difference. Three of the network members were convicted and given hefty jail terms at the beginning of 2002.
We work to challenge Paedophile activities and those who fail to protect vulnerable children from Child molesters. We focus much our efforts on paedophile prevention, for example, we pioneered a 24/7 ‘tag and tracking’ system for dangerous sex offenders who live within the community call the ‘Virtual Probation Officer (or VPO) which we hope will be undertaken by the Home office in the early part of next year (2004). We lobby parliament, work with the media, speak publicly to educate and inform. We are a different kind of survivor, we don’t ask for change, we make it happen".

This is a site for boys and girls who used to go to Quarriers homes but specifically the Bridge of Weir home. There are pictures, a registration page, and means of contacting former residents.

RAINN

The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network is America's largest anti-sexual assault organization. RAINN operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline and carries out programs to prevent sexual assault, help victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice.

Rape & Sexual Abuse Support Centre (N.W.W)

/Canolfan Gefnogaeth Trais a Cham-drin Rhywiol (G.O.C) is situated at PO Box 87 / Blwch Post 87 Caernarfon, Gwynedd LL55 9AA The Help line 01248 354885. It is open Mon-Fri 6-9pm, also Tues 1-4pm and Wed 9-12am. The Help line is open to anyone 14+ needing support and counselling regarding any form of Sexual Violence. They provide counselling, groupwork, information helpline, awareness raising workshops and practical support.

Respond

It is a provider of support for people with learning disabilities who have been sexually abused. The site is currently targeted at professionals and carers, and we are currently constructing a version of the site that will be accessible to people with learning disabilities themselves.

Rights of Women

Rights of Women is a women’s voluntary organisation committed to informing, educating and empowering women concerning their legal rights. It features details of their advice line, as well as downloadable information sheets and other resources for those seeking help, Their accessible website went live in December 2002. There are special features giving legal advice on domestic violence, divorce, and child contact.

Safeline

is a voluntary association based in the UK which has been established by women who were themselves sexually abused as children. SIARI [Self-Injury & Related Issues]

UK site about self-injury & related issues (dissociation, eating disorders, childhood trauma, abuse, etc.). Research based, with extensive input from self-injurers. Includes informational and inspirational pages, statistics, discussion board, resources, books, links, poems, artwork, stories. Site maintained by Jan Sutton, author of Healing the Hurt Within: Understand and relieve the suffering behind self-destructive behaviour.

Smyllum Survivors

A site set up specifically for the survivors of Smyllum House in Lanark, Scotland, or indeed any care home at any time. There is an article submission page, chat facility, guest book, find past friends facility, and links page.

SOBS (Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide)

This is a self-help, voluntary organisation who exist to meet the needs and break the isolation of those bereaved by the suicide of a close relative or friend. They offer telephone contacts, bereavement packs, group meetings (in a number of locations), one-day conferences, residential events, and information relating to practical issues and problems. Their aim is to provide a safe, confidential environment in which bereaved people can share their experiences and feelings, so giving and gaining support from each other.

Stop Abuse

This is a site run by an individual who is taking civil action himself and feels very strongly about the subject matter. It is full of material on the subject. There are all sorts of aspects to the site which are worth looking at. There are a lot of useful pieces of news as well as a links swapping facility. Well worth a look. The Web Author says " Stopping abuse means exposing the facts. Vulnerable people in need of help are exploited to a huge degree and society turns a blind eye. The victims are powerless to do anything to change things because, they need the very organizations which exploit them. Such people represent no value to society, their legal rights are ignored and so it continues".

Stop It Now

Stop it Now! UK & Ireland is a major national and local campaign that aims to stop child sexual abuse by encouraging abusers and potential abusers to seek help and by giving adults the information they need to protect children effectively. Stop it Now! has a national helpline 0808 1000 900 - Some good information laid out professionally

Survivors on the Net

A very full site with a chat line, newsletter and many contact points for survivors of childhood abuse. It seems very " user friendly" with a pleasant interface for those going through trauma. The organisation has been in existence since 1995.

Survivors Swindon

Survivors Swindon is a regionally based, nationally recognised agency, offering a confidential telephone helpline to male survivors of child sexual abuse and adult sexual assaults, and specialised training to NHS Trusts, Social Services, Victim Support and related agenices. They offer a unique experience, providing weekly group therapy sessions, run by Survivors for Survivors, in a safe supportive environment in which to overcome the traumas of your abusive past. Also, they are currently (July 2003) organising the 10th Annual March & Rally against child sexual abuse, and have had lawyers from ACAL thereon the day to advise, etc.
The site is full of enormously useful material for survivors of abuse to read. You can sign their guest book on the site. A visit is recommended .

Survivors UK

They have been in existence for over 10 Years and specialise in helping the victims of male rape. They are a London based organisation with a help line. There is a very useful reading list with reviews of publications on the subject. The site is fast and also contains links to other sites.

The Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities

The Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities aims to improve the quality of life for people with learning disabilities.  They do this by conducting research and sharing the findings with other people. The site is professionally put together and contains a welter of information

Trauma Survival. Org

TraumaSurvival.org is a UK based self help community established in 1997 with a focus on recovering from the long term effects of childhood sexual abuse. The site includes the Medicaid Abuse Enpsychlopedia, a web directory containing links to 10,000 pages of abuse-related material, a members-only discussion forum, chat facilities, and both complete web sites and individual pages which have been contributed by users. New forum members are always particularly welcome, and the over-all tone of the site is intended to be educational.

Twelve's Company

Whilst not generically an abuse survivor group, this charity based in Devonport has spawned Operation Emotion which has been set up to assist the many survivors of abuse of William Goad. Their mission statement reads "To enable and empower families, individuals and groups to take action on health, education, training and work which improves the quality of personal and community life, physically, mentally and spiritually."

Victims No Longer - (now known as "the Lantern Project")

A personal website set up by a survivor of abuse with many helpful sections, survivor stories, a guest book and a forum. The author says on the opening page " WELCOME TO THE SITE - YOU ARE AMONG FRIENDS AND YOU ARE SAFE HERE. If you have suffered sexual abuse, or you are supporting someone else who has been abused, you will find the material on this site helpful."
